Illustration Friday - Play

'Tea Party'

I thought of this as my son loves to play with his cousin Styliana and her dolls and girly toys

I recently saw a post where a mother asked if she should buy her son a doll set as he wanted one - she felt confused and then said she'd never have the same dilemma if her daughter wanted a robot.....

I never bring up gender issues, he's not even 4yrs old yet, he doesnt understand...just let them play.....

  1. This is so sweet. I think its fine that boys can play with dolls-what better training for being fathers!!!!

  2. Dolls for boys? We shouldn't have to worry about it, but we do! Actually I think sporting things are best for boys or girls. My sons were always outside playing footie or tennis etc. Now my grandsons in Suva, Fiji, love playing poker and skipbo and games on the computer, though one day they'll get into rugby I expect.

  3. Yes, let the child be and enjoy his own imagination and idyllic childhood. It's just mimicing life anyway...wonderful to see!
I love sitting and quietly watching young children play...it's one of my favourite things.

  4. ADORABLE!!!!!!! And I agree with the others -- how else would boys learn to be fathers???

  5. This is really cute, Anastasia.

You know, the only people who get hung up about this thing is the adults. The kiddies just like to play.

  6. How right you are! I use to manage a toy store and hated when people came in and said, "show me what you have for girls." You show them a chemistry set and they look at you like you are crazy!
My grandson (3) is the same way.
    LOVE your illustration!!!!

  8. I love this...looks like an illustration from a children's book. Maybe there is a story here as well as a dear drawing.

  9. I'm with you on the boys and dolls thing. I tried to give my boys dolls when they were little but they just held them sideways and pretended they were guns (even though we had no tv, no books with guns...they'd still bite their toast into the shape of guns and shoot each other with their toast!

And it's a really nice drawing too. Just delightful!

Great drawing, Anastasia! I also agree with everyone else. Children learn by example and they mimic the opinions and attitudes of adults. So if adults around them feel uncomfortable about using toys for the opposite gender, then so will the children. Let them have fun - that's the bottom line.

what a sweet illustration. You're right, we shouldn't have to even think about gendered toys, should we? I like my son playing with dolls, because he learns to be gentle, and besides, he likes trucks and things just as much!

  12. This illo is so wonderful Anastasia!! I'm so envious of your drawing skills - and the description goes along perfectly.

Our boys definitely need to feel uninhibited about playing with dolls and being gentle with babies and animals, etc. But don't be surprised when they still play with guns and trucks. Despite all the nature vs. nurture arguments through the years, boys and girls adopt natural gender roles and their play demonstrates that. Introducing toys that cross the gender roles is a GREAT thing to do!
